Post from iPod :)

It’s 1.1.4, it’s jailbroken, and it has music! This is my first post from my iPod touch and probably the last. It’s easy enough to type on the touch screen but still not good enough to be used for something like this. I’m revising what I have and getting ready to post it in the next couple of days if all goes well. So stay tuned…

Ipod Touch!!!

General No Comments

I restored my Ipod Touch to 1.1.4 and jailbroke it using iLiberty. I am now working on getting it to talk to Kubuntu again, and will post up the how to’s when I’m done with them. My upgrade to Kubuntu 8.04 was greatly slowed down by the computer hardware problems that I was having, but I have been slowly setting everything up and been taking a lot of notes. At work I’m running SuSe as well so I will start a section for it later on. I am currently having a problem sharing folders. The read access will work, but I cannot get the write rights to work on Samba. Once I get those worked out I will setup NFS shares.

The curse is finally over!!!

Things went bad there for a while…Aside from the 500gb hard drive that died, another one full of goodies destroyed all the data contained within it. Then, if that was not enough, the desktop itself died. This had already been a recent replacement of an older desktop which was giving in as well. I swapped the motherboard and cpu twice until finally I have a working computer! Gotta love those Acer motherboards that just die on you for no apparent reason. My laptop crapped out on me for a couple days as well. I don’t even remember what was wrong with that. My girlfriend’s laptop hard drive died as well. If that ever happens boot into the Kubuntu live cd and you just might be able to recover all your data. Well if that is not enough my car died and I fixed it and now her car is dead. The internet at our house is pretty much dead, have a directional antenna that is pointing in wrong direction after heavy winds and rain lol. My dog poisoned itself with ant pesticides and almost died, my girlfriends beta fish died two days after I got it, my iguana’s food was covered in mold overnight. If that was not a curse I do not know what is. Oh yes our wannabe bonsai plant died as well. But enough of that, we have moved past all that (I hope). All three previously working computers are now working fine, with the exception of Vista (dual boot) but no one cares about Vista. My car is working just fine now and hers will soon, hopefully before the end of today. All the pets, the remaining ones that is, are ok. Our current wannabe garden is also doing ok, although the daily hundred+ degree weather is taking its tole on the more delicate ones. So I guess it might not be over, but at least its contained.

The original sounded much better anyway…

I removed the beta they called remix and installed 8.04 with kde 3.5.9. I am in love again, where are the bugs the lack of configuration the frustration out of not being able to do what you have been used to doing for the past couple years. Now, that I have tried both, I get the full picture. I understand what is going on and the direction in which KDE is going. To be honest it looks pretty, but I don’t know if the new functionality is for me. I guess we will have to wait until the summer to find out. I’m excited, even though it might be too much eye candy Mac/Vista wannabe fluff, I’m willing to try it out.

I am documenting everything that I modify and install in Kubuntu 8.04, so that I may upload all that information here. Today, for the love of my life, I will put up a small Vmware guide and a link to the 116 any any update which seems to only be available in a google groups page for some reason. I need to install something though to make Wordpress work right, I cannot change from visual to code view. It might be a java problem. So the pre-guide will be here…Enjoy!…Be warned, I left the notes as I am doing them now so that you may see how I do what I do. Step into the mind of a crazy monkey that obviously likes to do things backwards. If I would have had installed all the requisites first, it would have been a lot easier on me. The actual guide will be posted as soon as I get wordpress working right so that I may edit correctly. If for some reason you cannot wait for the correct guide, then read all the steps and install all the requirements ahead of time like a normal person should, don’t do it the monkey way. Also, don’t bother getting any any 115, just go ahead and start of with 116. Here goes….

Quick and dirty Vmware guide
1. download vmware
2. extract contents of downloaded file (cd into the folder)
3. sudo ./vmware-instal.pl
4. accept all default locations
5. yes to running vmware-config.pl (as always Stupid vmon file won’t be compiled correctly so need vmware-any-any-update) vmware communities state to find patch at http://knihovny.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware/
6. tar xzvf vmware-any-any-update-115.tgz
7. cd vmware-any-any-update115
8. ./runme.pl and when asked to run vmware-config.pl answer YES (still no good, installing g++ from adept….still no good :(…..tried xinetd from adept, still no good….trying headers sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r`……still nothing…..trying an-any-116…woohooo!!!!!! finally got it here http://vmkernelnewbies.googlegroups.com/web/vmware-any-any-update-116.tgz it worked….
9. On networking, I always set ethernet to bridged and wireless to nat since wireless cannot do bridged…and don’t forget the host only

So list of requisites….
1. any-any-116 http://vmkernelnewbies.googlegroups.com/web/vmware-any-any-update-116.tgz
2. xinetd
3. g++
4. headers and build essentials ( sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r`)

New month, same old bugs…

Ok, I will reinstall Kubuntu on my laptop, this time without the kde4 and see what the difference is. I have been compiling a list of all the bugs and missing features that I have come across in my 3 day journey within the confines of what we like to call KDE4. I will leave my home desktop with kde4 so that I may make a comparison of the two. I will install either SLED10sp1 or OpenSuSe 10.3 on my work desktop, after I recover the files from the failing hard drive. Here is just a tiny list of what is bugging me right now.

1. Disks and File Systems is not in the system settings.
There are a lot of features, settings and configuration stuff that is just plain missing in kde4. This is just because they have not yet been ported from kde3.
2. Inability to add applications to system tray by right clicking.
I’m not sure if this is a bug or what is going on, but this is what has gotten on my nerves the most.
3. Get error every time I close kate. After I close the error the text file opens again, and upon closing it a second time I get the error again.
This has got to be a bug. This has happened to me on a clean install on 2 systems.
4. I get another error message, something apologizing for not being able to do something, I tried to get a screen shot of it yesterday only to freeze the computer for half an hour.

I know this is a tiny insignificant list, and I should overlook these minor glitches and move on. The thing is that this is a clean install and I am already having all these problems. I just feel like I am unable to configure anything the way that I am used to. I know that in June or July the new KDE4 will be ready for the public and I will be jumping up and down in joy…

First post from Kubuntu 8.04 Remix…

Something strange is happening with Operating system distributions. It seems like they get too good for their own good so they take it back a notch just so that you remember the good ol days when not everything was so simple. Microsoft was doing good with XP but Vista turned out to be garbage with a pretty face. SuSe was doing great, but took a couple steps back with 10. Now it seems that Kubuntu is taking the same turn, although I will not make a final judgement until Kde4 is ready. So is Kubuntu 8.04 remix a beta or the linux version of Windows ME? I am like a deer staring at headlights, do I try kde 3.5.9 or stick to kde4’s bugs and missing features? I have Lupe Fiasco’s song “Dumb it down” in my head, seems to me that the more we simplify how to use a computer the less we can do with them and the harder it becomes to do those things. I thought making things easier to use was supposed to have an opposite effect…Well enough jibber jabber, I have a 500 gig hard drive full of movies that is dying on me.

Kubuntu 8.04!!!

I’m downloading the new Kubuntu, thanks to Samutz for letting me know it was out. That’s how out of it I’ve been lately, lol. I destroyed my music library on my Ipod Touch while trying to add songs. Note to everyone, do not name two ipods the same name and then try to manage them with Amarok. I started using my old Ipod Shuffle and had not noticed that it had the same name and mount point as my new Touch. Took me two hours to get the Shuffle to work and still can’t get a new database to work on the Touch. This is great news though, because now I will start from scratch and finally do all my how-tos and notes on it. I will also add all the Kubuntu stuff related to this new release.

Update: I am backing stuff up and installing Kubuntu on all my machines. I am completely getting rid of of windows except for through vmware, and that’s just for work related stuff. I’m thinking of starting a get rid of Windows campaign. Samutz is enjoying himself hacking the ipod database, he’s got some good ideas that would make our music lives better. Life is good, lot’s of new content coming soon!

Spring Cleaning!!! New Kubuntu pages!!!

General No Comments

I have spent all weekend long, along with the love of my life and a select few friends cleaning my house in spring cleaning fashion. Mainly I needed to find some papers and figure out where to put some books so I tore the house apart until we got everything where it should be. It took three entire days, but we did a pretty good job. Other than that life has been pretty much uneventful.Website-wise, I have added some new Kubuntu Pages. They are:

Springbreak at Big Bend

I keep saying that I’m going to do this and going to do that and never do it. Well my latest excuse is spending a week at Big Bend National Park. It was great, being out in nature, dehydrating, not finding any shade while dehydrating, almost running out of water while hiking while dehydrating. Yes good times, good times. We saw a bear across the Rio Grande, our tent was sniffed for food by wild pigs and a coyote. It was a grand time, highly recommend it to everyone. I have a lot of pictures now of that trip, giving me more incentive to set something up on this website so that I may display them.

Brainshare has Ended, Savage 2 Linux finally here!!!

General No Comments

Brainshare 2008 has officially ended and I am now back home. I have learned a lot, met a lot of interesting people, and most importantly became an official beer tester for a week. Good times. I will share as much as time permits, until then be patient.

I just received an email from  s2 games. The linux client is finally out!!! After months of getting it to work on wine, the long ago promised client is now available. I will install it as soon as I can and keep everyone posted. Honestly I’m not as excited about the game as I once was, but I will give it this last chance now that the client is out.
